Tips To Making A Smoke-Free Fire This Season

Everyone loves to sit around a warm fire this time of year, especially when marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate are involved. But no one likes to leave the fire smelling like the fire. The smoke and debris that comes from sitting around a fire is not always the best for your health and can often linger on your clothes, hair, and be a pain to breathe if the wind blows your way. Many people don’t know but there are a few tips you can do to have a smoke-free fire this fall and winter season.
The Right Wood
Surprisingly most people don’t think about this. Different types of wood give you different results when burning. Your first step is to make sure that the wood is bone dry. Ensure there is no moisture; you can often tell if it is moist by its smell. The best kind of wood to use for a smoke free fire is oak and maple.
Keep It Above Ground
Using an above ground fire pit can be key to eliminating the smoke the fire produces. Because smoke travels upward, when using an above ground fire pit, this will help the smoke, if any, go right over your head instead of in your face!
Use A Fire Pit Grate
If using a fire pit that is in ground, ensure you use a steel fire pit grate. This will help keep your fire above ground some. This will allow the oxygen to flow to your fire making it warmer to cozy up by and eliminating smoke overall.
Stack The Wood
You may remember this from boy or girl scouts when you were a kid, but there is a method to stacking the wood and setting up for the best fire. There is the well known, Tee-Pee method, or you can just be sure to stack it in a way that allows oxygen to flow through the wood pieces. Just piling it in the fire pit does nothing but restrict the oxygen from flowing.
