You don’t have to have expensive equipment to take great photos. Really, all that you need is your iPhone and a few pointers for harnessing the camera that’s always in your pocket.

Consider the Angle

A lot of iPhone photography is captured straight-on, which doesn’t make for a very captivating shot, so try changing your perspective can change the entire composition and effect of a photo, and that’s especially true with iPhone photos. Try lining up any natural lines in the subject to lead the eye into the photo, using the rule of thirds, or changing the height from which you take the picture.

iPhone photography is often thought of as being on the fly, but if you’re serious about capturing great images with a phone, invest in a tripod setup. Not only will it help make group shots easier, but it also helps stabilize the phone and photo in less-than-ideal lighting conditions. In poor, dim lighting, you have to hold the phone very still to accommodate the slower shutter speed and avoid a blurry photo, which is much easier to do with a tripod.

Use Live Photos to Your Advantage

If candid shots of friends, family, and yourself are your goal, use the Live Photo setting on an iPhone to your advantage. Live Photos can be picked apart frame by frame to find just the right shot of the perfect giggle or twinkly smile, and they’re also useful if you tend to lose a lot of shots to blinking eyes.

Play Around with Editing

You don’t have to slap an obvious filter on a photo, but tweaking settings with the sharpness, light, and shadows can take a decent photo to a good photo and a good photo to a great photo. A lot of these settings are built-in to the iPhone camera, or you can download a separate app for more control.
